Athens, Greece 2004-06-08 13:49

Hej, hej!

We are still In Athens, Greece. Because of all the cargo that's going to Athens right now, the Olympics you know, our beloved Mr PikiPiki is a bit late. Everyday we have been getting different news; "the bike will probably be here tomorrow", "the bike will probably be here on Monday". "The bike will probably be here on Thursday", if you only knew how worried, stressed and annoyed we have been. Yesterday the cargo-department however confirmed that the bike is definitely here and on Tuesday, tomorrow, we are so out of here. Man, we are looking forward to bee on the road again!!!

Saturday, last week, we left Tanzania and Africa. Of course it feels a bit weird to be back in Europe. The first day here in Athens, we were almost in chock. We spent a full day just walking around and looking at everything and everyone; all the shops, all the big buildings, all the healthy people in modern clothes etc. And now we don't have any children after us screaming:"Mezungu (white man), give me money". Strange...

Even if we haven't been able to enjoy our time in Athens 100%, because of our lost bike, we like the city. We like the atmosphere and we like the mix of modern buildings and old monuments and ruins of historical temples. Since we arrived in Athens we have, among other places, visited the big landmark of the city, Acropolis, and the Roman Stadium, the arena that held the first Olympic Games in modern time. And of course it has been interesting to se an Athens that's preparing for the coming Olympic Games. It is a bit nerve wrecking though, to se the poor stressed Greeks that don't seem to be halfway done yet:-)
The most boring part of Athens is the prices. It's so expensive here; it's even more expensive than back home, in "expensive" Sweden! We pay 16 Euros a night for a dorm in Athens cheapest hostel, it's almost impossible to find a dinner at a restaurant for less than 15 Euros and if you'd like to have a coffee after dinner, well, that's another 3 Euros. Lucky for us we have run into our old good friend Ronald MC Donald, who only charges 4 Euros for a real party meal.

Tomorrow we are heading northeast towards our next big destination Istanbul, Turkey. After a couple of days in Turkey we are steering north to Bulgaria, followed by Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. At the date of today we don't really know where we'll go from there, but probably it will be the Check Republic, Germany and Denmark.

Our picture gallery is updated with pictures from Tanzania!!!

This weeks diary pictures will hopefully be out later today.

Se you soon,

Daniel och Helena
