Summary

Since there are two of us sitting on one bike it’s extremely important to pack light, to keep the weight down. This has definitely been on our minds when we have been chasing our equipment. Important is also to be prepared for different kinds of weather. Sahara heat, monsoon rain, blowing wind and winter cold.

We’re going to explore Africa on a Honda Africa Twin – 96. We think that this bike is perfect for this purpose because it’s all-round, robust, comfortable and reliable. The motorbike has been modified with a 43 litres petrol tank, aluminium cases, a central prop, protective frames and a comfort saddle.

Concerning spare parts and tools we are only going to bring what we think is absolutely necessary. These things weigh...We will for example bring a pinion, an oil filter and a clutch handle (all from Touring Butiken) as well as inner tubes, bearing, petrol pump and sparking plugs (NGK). An important tool is our Leatherman from Outside.

An important part of our equipment is our motorbike clothes. We are going to travel wearing our STR clothes from Jofama. These clothes are temperature regulating and sweat reducing (Outlast), they also have a detachable, breathable, wind and waterproof Dryway membrane. The clothes have adjustable CE-approved protectors. We also have STR rainwear and STR gloves. Further on we are going to wear Rukka base layer clothes and AGV cross helmets. Daniel is going to drive in cross boots (Alpinestar) and Helena will wear motorbike boots (Prexport) All from Touring Butiken.

We are going to camp in a Jack Wolfskin Thundra II tent (Touring Butiken) and sleep in Big Foot Light sleeping bags (Touring Butiken) on air mattresses. We will also bring silk sleeping bags for warm nights.

We’re going to cook with our multifuel kitchen XKG. We have chosen this kitchen because it’s small, handy and reliable together with the fact that it’s working with any flammable fluid. A really important part of our equipment is our water purifying system MSR. This system will make sure that we always have drinkable and clean water - important to our health. These products come from Outside.

We are aware of the fact that this journey involves risks. Risks like getting robbed, ill and injured. It feels very good to have good travel insurance from Europeiska Reseförsäkringar, HelpLine Plus.
